Health & Wellbeing

Free healthcare to all its citizens is at the core of Bhutan’s development policy – guided by the principals of Gross National Happiness. From a single hospital in 1961 Bhutan now has 29 general hospitals and close to 200 Basic Health Units (BHUs). As a result of good and timely health service delivery, life expectancy has now increased by 20 years.

The downside to free medical service is that it is unsustainable over the long haul. In a situation where the population is increasing every year, the burden on the government will be too heavy and resource constraints will cause service delivery to suffer.

This is where the Rotary Club of Thimphu is endeavoring to step in and lend a helping hand. Of the three main focuses, healthcare and wellbeing is one of our top most priorities. In collaboration with other Rotary Clubs around the world, the RC Thimphu is working on providing healthcare equipment such as emergency medical equipment and hemodialysis machines.

Please partner with us to equip our hospitals with healthcare equipment that they currently lack.
